Surgery for primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) has undergone dramatic changes during the last decade. Preoperative localizing procedures, intraoperative measurement of PTH, minimal invasive surgery, surgery under local anesthesia and short stay surgery, have all been introduced to facilitate the treatment of the disease. The change of paradigm from bilateral neck exploration to focused parathyroid surgery, has led to an increase in pHPT operations world wide.
The European Society of Endocrine Surgeons (ESES) has therefore dedicated the work shop 2009 to evaluate these new techniques from an evidence based perspective.
On the behalf of the local organizing committee of the ESES pHPT workshop 2009, it is a great pleasure for us to invite you to Lund, situated in the centre of the expansive Öresunds region. The conference venue, Lund University Hospital, is centrally located and within easy walking distance to the old central part of Lund.
Within this workshop we will be able to present an exciting scientific program including sessions regarding evidence based medicine (EBM) within pHPT surgery, free papers sessions and keynote lectures. The role of open audit and prospective databases, including results, will be discussed.
After presentation in plenary sessions with discussions during the meeting, an ESES positional statement or consensus document will be revised and published. A special highlight will be the Acta Chirurgica lecture.
We also hope that you in addition to the scientific program will enjoy the informal reception in the Hall of Pillars of the Old University Building and the gala dinner at the Grand Hotel.
Lund, founded more than one thousand years ago, is on of the oldest cities in Scandinavia. Today it is a city of creativity with several high-tech industries including Gambro, Tetra Pak, Alfa Laval, Astra Zeneca and Sony Ericsson Mobile communications. Many visitors are attracted by Lund for the combination of the historical surrounding, the university and its centre with small shops, restaurants, pubs and cafés.
We wish to invite you to a most enjoyable stay in Lund with a fruitful workshop.
Anders Bergenfelz
Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee
